Winning awards and contests isn’t something that usually impresses me, but checking Onster Merlin’s profile and noting she won the second edition of SL Idol got me curious. Curious as to how good someone must be to win SL Idol and is if for real. With word open on my computer, I forayed on to the BackPorch to take in the woman who claims she is a “Swedish Bathroom Singer”.
She opened her show with her warm up song “What If God Was One Of Us” and for a warm up, it was pretty good. She seemed a little tentative or maybe it was quiet, but I strained a bit to hear her. Nonetheless her voice was clear and fit perfectly to the song. She followed with “Little Lies” in much the same vain, loosening up a little part way through. I wasn’t sure if it was a usual thing or not, but it almost seemed like she was nervous or shy.
Now don’t get me wrong, Onster does have a wonderful voice and she can sing. She seemed to loosen up somewhat on “Sweet About Me” that was enjoyable to listen to. And by the end of the song, she seemed to have a little more of a dynamic presence. She gave us an awesome version “First Cut Is The Deepest” and with the tempo slightly more, it seemed like she livened up a bit.
Her backing tracks were pretty standard but were adequate, not too loud or soft, giving her voice a chance to carry her show.
By the time she was singing “Power Of Good-Bye, Onster was back to her less dynamic self. Maybe I was expecting too much, or maybe it’s just her nature and personality showing through. Onster does have a charming personality or so it seems between songs. Soft spoken, she does introduce each song so you know what you’re about to hear, but she probably needs to converse a little more and show off more of her charm.
With the incredible voice she does have, it’d be nice to have it thrown out a bit more. With the number of great voices in Second Life®, she really needs something to set her apart. Like on “My Favorite Game”, which is up tempo and can be a lot of fun, she just seemed to sing it without putting a whole lot more into it. It was well done, but again, it was just missing some oomph.
She continued with “Turn Me On” which was done with a little less hesitation and it was her best to this point. When she adds a little forcefulness, it improves so much. I’m a big Katie Melua fan and when Onster slid into “The Closest Thing To Crazy”, I was impressed. She did it wonderfully and with some drive, it would have been great.
With “Pride and Joy”, she seemed to get a little of that gumbo we have down here. It’s a great song and can really liven up a place. She found a bit of that here and there were signs of energy. She kept some of the momentum with “My Aphrodisiac Is You” and I felt at this point, this is the Onster I wanted to see and hear. She excels on Katie Melua songs.
Onster’s set list included “Still Got The Blues”, “Time After Time” and “Besame Mucho”. Onster Merlin is a wonderful singer with a great voice and worth checking out. Maybe I should stop taking in Saturday afternoon shows.
As for SL Idol? Well she is a very very good singer and if that’s what decided it, then I completely agree.
