MIMI CARPENTER "Tres fantastique"

Sometimes an opportunity presents itself and if you don’t take it, you miss out on a wonderful experience. So it was with Mimi Carpenter. An impromptu performance at Natida Ridge on Saturday gave me an opportunity to view a performance that I otherwise would have missed.

How do I describe Mimi? Well, for starters, a French singer living in Germany with an incredibly soft, silky, yet strong voice. She plays guitar as well and the combination was a joy for the 37 people or so in attendance. Mimi’s set was only 30 minutes, time for only six songs, but six songs during which I was mesmerized. She opened with Breathe and if you can image Anna Nalik with a French accent, then you have Mimi’s version of Breathe. I’ve heard the song performed so many times before, but listening to Mimi kept me glued to my position in front of the stage. She followed with “I Do”, before performing an original song “You Never Know”. Both songs had me entranced and anticipating more. Mimi delivered. She closed off with three incredible songs in French, and I apologize, but not being French myself, I didn’t catch the names of the songs. No matter. You didn’t need to know the names. The voice carrying them was enchanting and hypnotic.

Mimi accompanies herself on guitar and does so more than adequately. Thank god the stream was strong and I could hear every note clearly.

Mimi performs in both English and French and although this set was far too short, it did leave me wanting to see her again. Judging by her Google schedule for February, it would be hard to miss her.

“I wish to transmit what I feel through my music... It is for me a way to express myself as I am not so good in handling words, when I have to speak about myself and about what I feel..." – Mimi Carpenter
