I went to the Merry Prankster the other night for their open mic night. I thought I would see some up-coming In-World performers. This night, the Merry Prankster had six performers for three hours worth of music. I only had an hour to spend so I caught the first two.
I got there a little late and Amereth Popstar was on stage. Amereth is a very new (two weeks) in-world artist who specializes in modern rock and alternative music. The first song I heard was from Green Day. It felt like a warm up song and it showed. He might want to consider dropping that song. He then sang “Chasing Cars” which was excellently performed and suited he voice perfectly. Amereth performs on the guitar without any backing tracks. His next two songs were performed well. He did say he would not talk too much as he did not have much time with each performer having a thirty minute set. A song from the Foo Fighters was next (his personal fav) and he handled it well. He finished the half hour set with “Good Riddance”, another Green Day song. On stage presence needs work but all-in-all a good set for the night .
Gordon Digfoot then took the stage. Gordon also plays the guitar and seems to have good control of the instrument. Gordon’s profile says he prefers to play “Bluegrass, Country Western, Classic Rock, Beatles songs and if you request, a Nirvana song or two”. I believe his first song was “Mama Tried” which sounded very country to me. I missed the second song title again (I will have to work on that). No matter, I enjoyed listening to his voice. Gordon lets his personality come through as he did interact with the crowd and has more of a stage polish than the first performer. He continued his set and I really liked his cover of "Heard it Through the Grapevine". I was impressed with Gordon and expect him to be at the top of the in-world charts.
There were four more performers this night but after an enjoyable hour, I had to call it quits.
I enjoyed my first open mic night. I think there might be more open mic nights in my future.
